Area of Science:

  • Space physics
  • Particle detection

Background:

  • CR-39 track detectors were exposed on the NASA satellite LDEF for almost 6 years.
  • Space radiation environments pose challenges for scientific instruments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze heavy ion tracks detected by CR-39 detectors after long-term space exposure.
  • To determine the origin of detected heavy ions.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized CR-39 track detectors for passive radiation detection.
  • Exposed detectors on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite.
  • Performed quick look analysis of detector data post-recovery.

Main Results:

  • Detected heavy ion tracks on the CR-39 detectors.
  • Observed a background of low energy secondaries from proton interactions.
  • The heavy ions exhibited a steep energy spectrum.

Conclusions:

  • The steep energy spectrum of detected heavy ions strongly indicates a radiation belt origin.
  • CR-39 detectors are suitable for long-term space radiation monitoring.
