Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common complication of diabetes, but the specific role of neuropathy is not fully understood.
  • Diabetic ED is considered multifactorial, with vascular and neurological factors potentially contributing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the frequency of abnormal neurophysiological tests in patients with ED due to diabetes.
  • To compare these findings with patients experiencing ED due to non-diabetic neuropathies.
  • To estimate the contribution of neuropathy to the pathophysiology of diabetic ED.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 49 men with ED, classified as diabetic, neuropathic, or other origins.
  • Utilized patient history, autonomic symptom questionnaires, clinical examination, nerve conduction studies (NCS), sphincter ani electromyography (EMG), heart rate variability (HRV) testing, and quantitative sensory testing (QST).
