Summary

Most adults with pneumococcal bacteraemia (PB) have conditions recommending vaccination, yet few receive it. Increasing pneumococcal vaccine use is vital, especially for Maori and Pacific Island populations at higher risk.

Background:

  • Pneumococcal bacteraemia (PB) carries significant mortality, particularly in high-risk groups.
  • Despite available treatments, PB incidence may be reduced through increased pneumococcal vaccination rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the proportion of adult patients with PB who had indications for, but had not received, pneumococcal vaccination.
  • To assess the current vaccination status among patients diagnosed with PB.

  • Prospective follow-up of adult PB episodes in four Auckland hospitals from December 1998 to March 2000.

Conclusions:

  • A significant gap exists between recommended pneumococcal vaccination and actual uptake in adult PB patients.
  • Antimicrobial resistance underscores the need for increased pneumococcal vaccination.
  • Targeted vaccination strategies for high-risk ethnic groups and policy changes, such as funding status, may improve vaccine coverage.
