Radiation therapy patient localization can be improved using megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) reconstructed from portal imaging data. This study demonstrates the feasibility of creating useful localization images from limited projection views.
Area of Science:
- Medical Physics
- Radiotherapy Technology
- Image Reconstruction
Background:
- Current portal imaging provides limited 2D patient localization data during radiation therapy.
- Limitations of 2D imaging necessitate advanced techniques for accurate patient positioning.
- Megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) offers potential for 3D volumetric imaging in radiotherapy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the feasibility of reconstructing tomographic images using a commercial portal imaging device.
- To evaluate the performance of various CT reconstruction algorithms for radiotherapy applications.
- To determine the suitability of fan-beam projection data for MVCT reconstruction.
Main Methods:
- Acquisition of fan-beam projection data using a standard radiotherapy linear accelerator's portal imager.
- Examination of multiple computed tomography (CT) reconstruction algorithms.
- Assessment of image quality and utility for patient localization.
Main Results:
- Successful reconstruction of tomographic images from fan-beam projection data.
- Demonstration that iterative reconstruction techniques can yield useful localization images.
- Feasibility shown using a limited number of projection views (<=10).
Conclusions:
- Reconstructing tomographic images from portal imaging data is feasible for radiation therapy.
- Iterative reconstruction methods enable useful patient localization with few projections.
- This technique enhances the accuracy of patient positioning in radiotherapy.
