Summary

This case report details a rare cardiac angiosarcoma causing cardiac rupture. Early Doppler echocardiography findings of pericardial effusion and a ruptured right atrium may indicate this aggressive tumor.

Background:

  • Cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy.
  • Diagnosis is often delayed due to non-specific symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 34-year-old woman presented with chest pain and pericardial effusion, initially treated for pericarditis.
  • After 3 months, she developed hypotension; Doppler echocardiography revealed increased effusion and right atrial-pericardial communication.

Findings:

  • Emergency surgery identified a ruptured right atrium with a tumor extending from the pericardium to the right ventricle.
  • The right atrial wall was thinned and repaired with autologous pericardium.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the 7th instance of cardiac angiosarcoma leading to cardiac rupture.
