Area of Science:

  • Research Methodology
  • Scientific Inquiry

Background:

  • Triangulation involves combining multiple perspectives or methods.
  • It aims to overcome limitations of single research approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore diverse triangulation strategies in research.
  • To provide guidance on the appropriate application of different triangulation types.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of triangulation and multimethod strategies since 1960.
  • Analysis of research books focused on triangulation.

Main Results:

  • Triangulation integrates multiple theoretical perspectives, data sources, investigators, or analysis methods.
  • Its goal is to reduce bias and improve the interpretability of research findings.

Conclusions:

  • Triangulation does not validate fundamentally flawed research.
  • Researchers must justify the use of triangulation and demonstrate its enhancement of the study.
