Tuberculin sensitivity in a high-risk canine population.

W R Snider, D Cohen, J S Reif

    American Journal of Epidemiology
    |August 1, 1975

    Summary

This study investigated tuberculosis in dogs exposed to infected humans. No dogs showed definitive signs of the disease, suggesting limited canine tuberculosis transmission from humans.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary epidemiology
    • Zoonotic disease research

    Background:

    • Canine tuberculosis is rare but can be transmitted from humans.
    • Understanding transmission dynamics is crucial for public health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the risk of tuberculosis infection in dogs exposed to humans with active tuberculosis.
    • To evaluate diagnostic methods for canine tuberculosis in high-risk populations.

    Main Methods:

    • Epidemiologic study of 29 high-risk dogs and 70 control dogs in Philadelphia (1966-1968).
    • Utilized history, physical examination, intradermal tuberculin testing (USDA tuberculin and PPD), radiography, and bacteriologic examination.

    Main Results:

    • Ten of 29 high-risk dogs had positive reactions to USDA tuberculin; five of these also reacted to PPD.
    • No physical, radiographic, or bacteriologic evidence of tuberculosis was found in any studied dogs.
    • Two control dogs showed positive reactions to USDA tuberculin, none to PPD.

    Conclusions:

    • While some exposed dogs showed tuberculin reactivity, no definitive cases of canine tuberculosis were confirmed.
    • Further investigation is needed to understand the implications of tuberculin reactivity in dogs without clinical signs.
