Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Virology

Context:

  • Poland experienced a substantial increase in reported influenza cases in 1999 compared to the previous year.
  • The Małopolskie voivodeship recorded the highest incidence rate.
  • Children under 14 represented a significant proportion of cases.

Purpose:

  • To report on the epidemiological situation of influenza in Poland during 1999.
  • To detail the incidence, severity, and virological characteristics of influenza outbreaks.
  • To compare influenza data from 1999 with 1998.

Summary:

  • A total of 2,344,773 influenza cases were reported in Poland in 1999, a 2.8-fold increase from 1998.
  • Hospitalizations rose eightfold, and deaths increased 6.4-fold, with 402 fatalities attributed to influenza.
  • Six influenza B virus strains were isolated and confirmed to be antigenically related to the B/Beijing/184/93 vaccine strain.

Impact:

  • Highlights the significant public health burden of influenza in Poland during 1999.
  • Provides crucial data for public health interventions and vaccine strain selection.
  • Underscores the importance of ongoing influenza surveillance and preparedness.
