Summary

Manual subdermal shaving is the best surgical treatment for axillary osmidrosis, offering the lowest odor recurrence rate. While other methods provide cosmetic benefits, they compromise odor control, making shaving the preferred choice for effective axillary osmidrosis management.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Surgical Procedures

Background:

  • Axillary osmidrosis, caused by excessive apocrine gland secretion, leads to significant social distress.
  • Radical surgical gland elimination is effective but associated with complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare existing subcutaneous apocrine gland elimination methods for axillary osmidrosis.
  • Evaluation based on odor control, scarring, immobilization, and surgical complications.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative study of 189 patients undergoing surgery for axillary osmidrosis.
  • Procedures included manual subdermal shavings, liposuction curettage, CO2 laser vaporization, and ultrasonic aspiration.

Main Results:

  • Manual shaving demonstrated the lowest malodor recurrence rate (7.7%) but had wider scars and longer immobilization.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Liposuction and ultrasonic aspiration offered cosmetic advantages and fewer complications but higher recurrence or dissatisfaction.
  • CO2 laser vaporization showed similar results to shaving but with a higher recurrence rate.
  • Conclusions:

    • Manual subdermal shaving remains the treatment of choice for axillary osmidrosis due to its superior odor control.
    • Adjuvant procedures may improve scar appearance and reduce complications but often fail to adequately address recurrence.
