Cervical teratoma in a dog.

Summary

A boxer dog presented with a cervical swelling, diagnosed via ultrasound and histology as a benign cervical teratoma. This rare tumor, containing elements from all three germ layers, originated near the mandibular salivary gland.

Background:

Teratomas are rare germ cell tumors composed of tissues from three germ layers.
Cervical teratomas in young adult dogs are exceptionally uncommon, especially those associated with salivary glands.
Diagnostic challenges include differentiating teratomas from other cervical masses and assessing their relationship with adjacent structures.

Observation:

A young adult boxer dog exhibited a painless, antibiotic-refractory swelling in the left cranial cervical region.
Ultrasound revealed a hypoechoic mass adjacent to the left mandibular salivary gland.
Surgical excision demonstrated the cystic mass extending through and confluent with the salivary gland capsule.

Findings:

Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of derivatives from all three germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm).
The excised mass was diagnosed as a benign cervical teratoma, with no evidence of malignancy.
The teratoma's intimate association with the mandibular salivary gland suggests a potential developmental origin.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of considering teratomas in the differential diagnosis of persistent cervical masses in dogs.
Understanding the anatomical relationship is crucial for surgical planning and complete tumor resection.
Further investigation into the specific embryological origins of canine cervical teratomas may be warranted.
