    Summary

    Measuring skin electrical potential difference shows basal cell carcinoma differs significantly from normal skin. However, overlapping results make this method currently unsuitable for diagnosis.

    Background:

    • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common skin cancer.
    • Accurate and non-invasive diagnostic methods for BCC are needed.
    • Electrical potential differences on the skin surface may offer diagnostic insights.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential of measuring resting electrical potential difference (EPD) on the skin surface as a diagnostic tool for basal cell carcinoma.
    • To compare EPD measurements between BCC lesions, benign inflammatory lesions, and normal skin.

    Main Methods:

    • Resting electrical potential difference was measured on the skin surface of patients with suspected BCC.
    • Measurements were taken on BCC lesions, benign inflammatory lesions, and contralateral normal skin.

    Conclusions:

    • While basal cell carcinoma exhibits a significantly different mean electrical potential difference compared to normal skin, the considerable overlap in measurements limits its current utility.
    • The resting electrical potential difference measurement, in its present form, is not a reliable diagnostic technique for basal cell carcinoma due to population overlap.
