Summary

Vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) dental impression materials exhibit thixotropy for non-drip properties. Both Imprint II and Examix showed thixotropy, with Imprint II also demonstrating yield stress, enhancing its non-drip performance.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Rheology

Background:

  • Vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) materials are widely used for dental impressions.
  • Thixotropy is a desirable property for VPS materials, providing 'non-drip' characteristics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the rheological properties of VPS materials.
  • To determine the flow properties relevant to dental applications.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed rheological characteristics of two low-viscosity VPS materials using a Dynamic Stress Rheometer.
  • Utilized cone and plate geometry for measurements.

Main Results:

  • Both Imprint II pastes exhibited yield stress and thixotropy.
  • Examix pastes lacked yield stress, but the catalyst paste showed significant thixotropy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Both products demonstrated thixotropic properties.
  • Conclusions:

    • The combination of yield stress and thixotropy in VPS materials prevents material drip.
    • These properties ensure material stability during tray insertion and seating.
