  • A model predicting cognitive development was tested.
  • Hierarchical levels of cognitive development (dualism, relativism, commitment) were examined.

  • Critical thinking skill significantly predicted only the dualistic level of cognitive development.
  • Critical thinking dispositions were significant predictors across all three levels (dualism, relativism, commitment).
  • Experience was a significant contributor only to the commitment level of cognitive development.

Conclusions:

  • Developing a critical thinker in nursing likely requires time and experience.
  • Findings suggest a need to re-evaluate policies for assessing nursing education based on cognitive development.
  • Critical thinking dispositions are crucial for cognitive advancement at all stages of nursing practice.
