Pulmonary function tests in diabetes mellitus patients show preserved spirometry and normal diffusing capacity. Impaired exercise performance may stem from cardiovascular issues, not lung problems, negating routine pulmonary screening needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate pulmonary function and exercise capacity in patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • To determine if diabetes type or disease characteristics correlate with pulmonary abnormalities.

Main Methods:

  • Combined cardiopulmonary exercise testing was performed on 27 diabetes mellitus patients.
  • Pulmonary function parameters including spirometry and diffusing capacity were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Spirometry (FVC, FEV1, FEF25-75) was preserved; residual volume/total lung capacity was slightly elevated, particularly in type 1 diabetes.
