Summary

Transdermal nicotine patches did not effectively treat Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms in a 12-week trial. This study found no significant benefits for non-smoking PD patients using nicotine patches alongside standard treatment.

  • To assess nicotine's impact on motor function, fine motor skills, tremor, and depression in non-smoking PD patients.

Main Methods:

  • A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 32 non-smoking PD patients.
  • Patients received escalating doses of transdermal nicotine patches or placebo patches.
  • Symptom assessment included standardized scales (Columbia University Rating Scale, Webster, Schwab-England), timed walking tests, fine motor skill tests, and the Hamilton Depression Scale.
