Summary

Low-level laser therapy using specific frequencies did not significantly improve bone density after molar extractions. While salivary markers showed changes, the laser therapy did not enhance osseointegration or bone healing in this study.

Background:

  • Low-level laser radiation is explored for its potential biostimulatory effects in wound healing.
  • Previous research suggests laser irradiation of extraction sockets may promote faster healing and reduce discomfort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of different frequencies of low-level laser radiation (670 nm diode and 632.8 nm He-Ne) on healing after human molar extractions.
  • To assess objective markers including salivary secretory IgA and albumin levels, and bone density changes.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 150 patients undergoing molar extractions, with a control group of 30 receiving non-laser therapy.
  • Objective measurements included salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) and albumin levels, and bone density via digital radiovisiography.

  • Subjective patient feedback on treatment efficacy was also recorded.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant differences were observed in salivary sIgA and albumin levels between laser-irradiated and non-irradiated groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Low-level laser therapy, under the tested conditions, demonstrated no significant influence on osseointegration or bone density following molar extractions.
    • Observed changes in salivary markers suggest a potential biostimulatory effect, but this did not translate to enhanced bone healing in this study.
