Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Context:

  • Gallbladder polyps are found in 4-5% of the general population.
  • While most gallbladder polyps are benign, some possess premalignant potential.
  • Gallbladder carcinoma carries a poor prognosis, emphasizing the need for early detection and intervention.

Purpose:

  • To outline the clinical management of gallbladder polyps detected via ultrasonography.
  • To evaluate the role of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in managing gallbladder polyps.
  • To provide guidance on surveillance strategies for patients with gallbladder polyps.

Summary:

  • Ultrasonography is effective in detecting gallbladder polyps.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is recommended for gallbladder polyps due to low associated morbidity.
  • A conservative approach with regular ultrasonography is an option for patients with contraindications to surgery, with cholecystectomy indicated if the polyp grows.

Impact:

  • Facilitates timely surgical intervention for potentially malignant gallbladder polyps.
  • Reduces the risk of advanced gallbladder cancer through early detection and treatment.
  • Improves patient prognosis by recommending minimally invasive surgical procedures.
