Summary

Researchers developed short (12-item) and screening (4-item) versions of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) for assessing caregiver burden in dementia. These briefer ZBI tools maintain comparable results to the full version, simplifying assessments.

Background:

Caregiver burden is a significant issue in managing cognitively impaired older adults.
The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) is a widely used measure, but its length can be a limitation.
There is a need for shorter versions of the ZBI for various study designs.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate short (12-item) and screening (4-item) versions of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI).
To ensure these versions are suitable for diverse diagnostic groups of older adults with cognitive impairment.
To facilitate their use in cross-sectional, longitudinal, and intervention studies.

Main Methods:

Utilized data from 413 caregivers of cognitively impaired older adults.

Employed factor analysis and item-total correlations to reduce the 22-item ZBI.

Considered diagnosis and change scores in item reduction.

Main Results:

Developed a 12-item short version and a 4-item screening version of the ZBI.
Demonstrated high correlations between the short/screening versions and the full ZBI (0.83–0.97).
Confirmed comparable results to the full ZBI using two-way ANOVA.

Conclusions:

The short and screening ZBI versions yield comparable results to the full instrument.
Item reduction did not compromise the psychometric properties of the ZBI.
These briefer versions may enhance the ease of administration for caregiver burden assessments.
