Summary

Gliosarcomas and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) exhibit similar clinical features, survival rates, and treatment responses. These rare brain tumors do not present distinct patterns, suggesting unified treatment approaches are appropriate.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Central Nervous System Neoplasms
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Gliosarcomas are rare biphasic central nervous system neoplasms.
  • They consist of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) admixed with a sarcomatous component.
  • Conflicting reports exist regarding their clinical aggressiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine clinical features, treatment, survival, and patterns of failure in gliosarcoma patients.
  • To compare gliosarcoma patients with a larger group of GBM patients.
  • To refine comparison using a matched pair analysis of GBM patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 422 GBM patients treated between 1980-1999.
  • Identified 12 gliosarcoma cases for study.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Matched 12 gliosarcoma patients with 12 GBM patients based on key clinical parameters.
  • Main Results:

    • Median survival for gliosarcoma patients was 11.5 months.
    • Median survival for the entire GBM group was 8.1 months (P=0.16).
    • Median survival for the control GBM group was 11.0 months (P=0.36).
    • All gliosarcoma patients experienced local recurrence and died within 19.3 months post-radiation.

    Conclusions:

    • Gliosarcomas and GBM show no discernible clinical differences in features, survival, or failure patterns.
    • Current evidence supports applying identical treatment principles to both gliosarcomas and GBM.
