Summary

Certain black strings are unstable but their horizons will not pinch off. Instead, new static black string solutions will form, challenging previous theories on black hole evolution.

Area of Science:

  • Theoretical physics
  • General relativity
  • Black hole thermodynamics

Background:

  • Nonextremal black strings (and p-branes) are known to be unstable to linearized perturbations.
  • It is widely believed that this instability leads to classical horizon pinch-off and quantum mechanical separation, forming higher-dimensional black holes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the classical behavior of unstable black string horizons.
  • To challenge the prevailing theory of black string instability leading to pinch-off.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of linearized perturbations on black string solutions.
  • Investigation of classical event horizon dynamics under specific assumptions.

Main Results:

  • Classical event horizons of black strings cannot pinch off under very mild assumptions.
  • Instability leads to new static black string solutions that are not translationally invariant.

Conclusions:

  • The widely believed mechanism of black string horizon pinch-off is incorrect.
  • Unstable black strings evolve into new, non-translationally invariant static solutions, not higher-dimensional black holes.
