[Clinical applications of methods for assessing the autonomic nervous system]

This paper will review the usefulness of the evaluation of the autonomic control in cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, hypertension, myocardial infarction and diabetes. Emphasis will be given to the relevance of the parasympathetic/sympathetic alterations found in the above-mentioned conditions in determining the cardiovascular risk profile of the individual patient.
