Squamous cell carcinoma of the nail bed is rare and often mistaken for fungal infections. Early biopsy is crucial for accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of this uncommon malignancy.

Background:

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the nail bed is an infrequent malignancy.
It often presents with clinical features that mimic benign conditions, most notably fungal infections (onychomycosis).

Observation:

The diagnostic challenge lies in differentiating nail bed SCC from other nail disorders.
A high index of suspicion is required for patients presenting with persistent or unusual nail changes.

Findings:

Histological examination via biopsy is the definitive method for diagnosing nail bed SCC.
Delayed diagnosis can lead to advanced disease and poorer prognoses.

Implications:

Emphasizes the need for clinicians to consider malignancy in differential diagnoses of nail bed lesions.
Recommends prompt biopsy for any suspicious or persistent nail bed abnormalities to ensure early detection and management of SCC.
