    Depression is linked to reduced mononuclear phagocyte (MPh) activity and altered interleukin (IL) levels, particularly lower IL-1 beta production and increased IL-2. These changes are most pronounced in early-stage depression.

    Context:

    • Interleukin (IL) levels and mononuclear phagocyte (MPh) activity are implicated in mood disorders.
    • Previous research suggests a link between immune system dysregulation and depression.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the relationship between interleukin levels, mononuclear phagocyte activity, and depression in patients before treatment.
    • To explore alterations in IL-1 beta, IL-2, and soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) in relation to MPh activity in mono- and bipolar depression.

    Summary:

    • A study of 19 patients with depression revealed low MPh activity, decreased IL-1 beta production by monocytes (p < 0.05), and a trend towards reduced IL-2 production by lymphocytes.
    • Significant findings included increased IL-2 serum concentration (p < 0.05) and decreased sIL-2R concentration (p = 0.05).
