Yttrium tricopper dialuminium (YCu3Al2) was investigated for hydrogen storage potential. Despite aluminum substitution in similar structures enhancing hydrogen uptake, this compound showed no significant hydrogen absorption or desorption under tested conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Solid State Chemistry
  • Hydrogen Storage

Background:

  • Yttrium tricopper dialuminium (YCu3Al2) shares the hexagonal CaCu5 structure.
  • Aluminum substitution in AB5 structures often improves hydrogen uptake.
  • YCu5 itself does not exhibit hydrogen absorption.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore if aluminum substitution in YCu3Al2 expands the metal-atom lattice for improved hydrogen storage.
  • To evaluate the hydrogen absorption/desorption characteristics of YCu3Al2.

Main Methods:

  • Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) up to 773 K under 3 MPa H2 pressure.
  • Pressure-Composition Isotherm (P-C-T) measurements between 298-673 K under 3.3 MPa H2 pressure.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • No enthalpy change was observed via DTA, indicating no reaction with hydrogen.
  • P-C-T diagrams revealed no significant hydrogen absorption or desorption within the tested temperature and pressure ranges.

Conclusions:

  • Aluminum substitution in YCu3Al2 does not enhance its hydrogen storage capacity.
  • The YCu3Al2 compound is unsuitable for practical hydrogen storage applications under the studied conditions.
