Summary

Major depressive disorder (MDD) significantly impairs olfactory sensitivity, particularly in severe cases. Treatment can restore olfactory function, suggesting a link to early sensory processing.

  • To investigate olfactory sensitivity and odor evaluations in patients with unipolar major depressive disorder.
  • To compare olfactory performance between patients during acute depression and after treatment, and with healthy controls.
  • To explore the relationship between depression severity and olfactory deficits.
