Summary

AlphaB-crystallin, a stress protein, is elevated in the small intestine of celiac disease patients, correlating with mucosal atrophy. This suggests a role for stress response in celiac disease pathogenesis.

Background:

  • Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten ingestion, leading to small intestinal damage.
  • AlphaB-crystallin is a heat shock protein involved in cellular stress responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate alphaB-crystallin expression in celiac disease small intestinal biopsies.
  • To determine the relationship between alphaB-crystallin levels and the severity of mucosal atrophy in celiac disease.

  • Immunohistochemistry was used to detect alphaB-crystallin in duodenal biopsy specimens from 12 celiac patients and 10 controls.
