  • Surgical Care
  • Postoperative Management

Context:

  • Analysis of the first year of Recovery Room (RR) operations at Azienda Ospedaliera Santa Maria degli Angeli.
  • Comparison of institutional experience with existing literature on RR efficacy.
  • Evaluation of organizational and clinical workflows in a specialized postoperative care unit.

Purpose:

  • To analyze the organizational and clinical activities of a newly established Recovery Room.
  • To assess the impact of RR on postoperative patient outcomes.
  • To compare clinical data with established literature benchmarks.

Summary:

  • 1,047 patients underwent surgery, with 9% utilizing the RR. The majority of patients were aged 61-80 (51%) and classified as ASA 2 (53.3%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Common procedures included general, thoracic, and vascular surgery (56.8%), with general anesthesia being prevalent (56.8%). Average RR stay was 3 hours 49 minutes.
  • No deaths or cardio-respiratory arrests occurred. Complications included cardio-circulatory issues (13.15%), respiratory problems (3.62%), and postoperative nausea and vomiting (3.62%).
  • Impact:

    • The study highlights the critical role of effective early postoperative management in surgical success.
