Abstract:
The object of this note is to provide a prosopographical analysis of the eighteenth-century scientific community with a view to explaining the gradual breakdown over the course of that century of the traditional general categories of 'natural philosophy' and 'natural history', and their replacement by a wide range of separate scientific disciplines.
