[The Freudians: integration into American society during world war II]
Abstract:
It has been maintained that in America--the country that first opened its doors to Freud's thought--classical psychoanalysis has been responsible for most of the acceptance of psychoanalytic ideas. The author argues that classical Freudians were not the only ones responsible for this acceptance. After the arrival of emigres, however, they were the ones to be credited for the spread of psychoanalysis in medicine, and particularly in psychosomatic medicine. But there was a convergence of forces outside their realm--in anthropology, sociology, politics and literature--which together were infuential in turning psychoanalysis into a popular subject throughout the culture at large.
