Morphological features in a neutral lipid storage disease.

G Slavin, E J Wills, J E Richmond

    Journal of Clinical Pathology

    Summary

This study describes a generalized storage disease with widespread intracellular neutral lipid accumulation. Diagnosis can be aided by identifying clear vacuoles in granulocytes and jejunal epithelial cells.

    Area of Science:

    • Cell Biology
    • Biochemistry
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Generalized storage diseases involve intracellular accumulation of various substances.
    • Neutral lipid deposition can lead to significant cellular dysfunction and morphological changes.

    Observation:

    • Widespread intracellular neutral lipid accumulation observed in cytoplasm and occasional nuclei.
    • Clear cytoplasmic vacuoles noted in granulocytes and jejunal epithelial cells.
    • Lipid inclusions identified as triglycerides, free in the cytoplasm, not membrane-bound.

    Findings:

    • Morphological changes consistent with a generalized storage disease characterized by neutral lipid deposition.
    • Vacuolation in granulocytes and jejunal epithelium can aid in diagnosis.
    • Biochemical basis remains uncertain, potentially involving defective lipase or impaired fatty acid metabolism.

    Implications:

    • Recognition of these morphological features can facilitate diagnosis of this lipid storage disorder.
    • Understanding the cellular defect is crucial for developing targeted therapies.
    • Distinguishing this condition from other lipid disorders like abetalipoproteinemia is important for accurate patient management.
