Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Comparative Oncology

Background:

  • Lymphosarcoma is a significant neoplastic disease in animals.
  • Early diagnosis and understanding of its presentation in camelids are crucial for effective management.

Observation:

  • A 16-month-old female alpaca presented with acute anorexia and depression.
  • Gross necropsy revealed an enlarged liver and multifocal lesions in the renal cortices.

Findings:

  • Histologic examination confirmed diffuse lymphocytic infiltration.
  • The findings were consistent with lymphosarcoma, a type of cancer.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering lymphosarcoma in young camelids with non-specific clinical signs.
  • Further research into the specific oncogenic factors and treatment protocols for alpaca lymphosarcoma is warranted.
