Background:

  • Functional instability is a common consequence of acute ankle sprains.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess and compare joint position sense (JPS) in individuals with recurrent ankle sprains versus uninjured controls.
  • To investigate the impact of recurrent ankle sprains on proprioceptive acuity.

Main Methods:

  • A pedal goniometer was used to measure ankle JPS in a plantarflexion/inversion position, mimicking common injury mechanisms.
  • Active and passive JPS were assessed by having participants reproduce specific ankle positions.
  • Subjects with recurrent sprains had no injury for at least three months prior to testing.
