Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic Flock of Birds (FOB) scanning accurately quantifies ventricular stroke volume in a dynamic model. This method shows improved correlation compared to 2D techniques, facilitating left ventricular function assessment.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Cardiovascular Technology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Accurate quantification of ventricular stroke volume is crucial for assessing left ventricular function.
  • Traditional two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography methods have limitations in precise volume measurement.
  • Advancements in three-dimensional (3D) imaging technologies offer potential for improved accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of a 3D magnetic position sensor system (Flock of Birds - FOB) for quantifying ventricular stroke volumes.
  • To compare the accuracy of 3D FOB system with conventional 2D biplane methods.
  • To assess the practicality and utility of 3D FOB scanning in dynamic models.

Main Methods:

  • A latex balloon model simulating the left ventricle was used with controlled pulsatile stroke volumes (15-65 ml/beat).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Scanning was performed using a 5.0 mHz transducer with an integrated FOB magnetic receiver.
  • 3D Echopac software (GE) and a 2D biplane area-length method were used for stroke volume calculations and compared to direct measurements.
  • Main Results:

    • The 3D FOB system demonstrated a strong correlation with reference stroke volumes (r = 0.97, P = 0.0001).
    • This correlation was significantly improved compared to the 2D biplane method (r = 0.87, P = 0.0011).
    • The 3D method showed a lower standard error of the estimate (SEE = 2.83 ml) than the 2D method (SEE = 3.87 ml).

    Conclusions:

    • Three-dimensional magnetic FOB scanning is a practical and accurate method for quantifying ventricular stroke volumes.
    • The 3D FOB system offers superior accuracy over 2D methods for stroke volume quantification.
    • This technology should facilitate improved assessment of left ventricular function.
