Early-onset hidradenitis suppurativa.

Summary

Hidradenitis suppurativa may be linked to androgen activity, as seen in a young girl who developed the condition shortly after adrenarche. Early puberty could contribute to the unusually early onset of this skin disease.

Background:

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
HS typically affects individuals after puberty, with onset usually occurring in early adulthood.
The role of androgens in HS pathogenesis is suspected but not fully elucidated.

Observation:

A 9-year-old female patient presented with early signs of adrenarche.
Hidradenitis suppurativa developed in the patient 3 months after the onset of adrenarche.
This patient's age of onset is exceptionally early, as less than 2% of HS cases begin before age 11.

Findings:

A close temporal association was observed between the onset of adrenarche and hidradenitis suppurativa.
The patient experienced early puberty, potentially contributing to the premature disease onset.
These observations support the hypothesis that hidradenitis suppurativa is androgen-dependent.

Implications:

This case highlights a potential link between early pubertal changes and the development of hidradenitis suppurativa.
Further research into the androgenic pathways in HS is warranted.
Understanding early onset factors may lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for pediatric HS.
