Homeopathy offers a promising alternative for treating hyperactive children, showing comparable efficacy to methylphenidate (MPD). This approach is particularly beneficial for preschoolers and non-urgent cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Area of Science:
- Integrative Pediatrics
- Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Background:
- Rising prescriptions of methylphenidate (MPD) for hyperactive children raise concerns.
- Limited awareness exists regarding alternative treatment options for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
- A prospective trial was designed to evaluate homeopathy's efficacy in pediatric ADHD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the efficacy of individualized homeopathic treatment in children diagnosed with ADHD.
- To compare the effectiveness of homeopathy with methylphenidate (MPD) in managing ADHD symptoms.
- To identify patient subgroups that may benefit most from homeopathic interventions versus MPD.
Main Methods:
- A prospective trial included 115 children (aged 3-17) meeting DSM-IV criteria for ADHD.
- All participants initially received individualized homeopathic treatment.
- Patients not achieving 50% clinical improvement were switched to MPD; outcomes were reassessed after 3 months.
Main Results:
- 75% of children (86/115) responded positively to homeopathy, achieving 55% improvement in the Conners Global Index (CGI).
- 22% of children (25/115) required MPD after a mean homeopathic treatment duration of 22 months, showing 48% CGI improvement.
- Homeopathy demonstrated comparable clinical improvement (73%) to MPD (65%) in managing ADHD symptoms.
Conclusions:
- Homeopathy presents a valuable alternative to MPD for non-urgent pediatric ADHD cases.
- Homeopathic treatment outcomes appear similar to those of MPD, particularly in preschoolers.
- MPD was primarily needed for children with insufficient sensory integration for school readiness.
