Summary

Home oxygen therapy did not demonstrate a survival benefit for patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD). A single trial showed similar mortality rates in treated and control groups, questioning its effectiveness.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Respiratory Research

Background:

  • Retrospective data suggest limited effectiveness of oxygen therapy in interstitial lung disease (ILD).
  • Hypoxemia is a common complication in ILD patients, necessitating treatment considerations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of domiciliary oxygen therapy on survival and quality of life in hypoxemic ILD patients.
  • To synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on home oxygen therapy for ILD.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic search of the Cochrane Airways Group register for relevant RCTs.
  • Inclusion criteria: adult hypoxemic ILD patients, long-term domiciliary oxygen vs. control.

Main Results:

  • Only one unpublished RCT met the selection criteria.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Three-year mortality was approximately 91% in both oxygen-treated and control groups (Peto OR 0.99; 95% CI 0.16-6.26).
  • Data on quality of life and physiological parameters were not reported.
  • Conclusions:

    • The single RCT identified does not support the assumption of a survival benefit from home oxygen therapy in ILD.
    • Further high-quality research is needed to clarify the role of oxygen therapy in ILD management.
