Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma, a rare cancer, can occur in the pleura or peritoneum. While often indolent, some cases show aggressive behavior and may be linked to asbestos exposure.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma is an uncommon epithelial mesothelioma subtype.
  • Previously reported cases predominantly affected young women, often without asbestos exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the clinical and pathological features of well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma.
  • To investigate the association with asbestos exposure and clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 14 cases of well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma.
  • Review of patient demographics, tumor location, asbestos exposure history, and clinical follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Seven pleural, six peritoneal, and one tunica vaginalis cases were identified.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The average patient age was 58 years, with a male predominance (11 males, 3 females).
  • Six patients had a history of asbestos exposure; six of nine with follow-up had indolent disease.
  • Conclusions:

    • Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma is a rare mesothelioma variant with variable prognosis.
    • Asbestos exposure is an etiologic factor in some cases.
    • Clinical behavior ranges from indolent to aggressive.
