Summary

This case highlights aberrant retropharyngeal thymic tissue in an infant presenting with respiratory distress. Surgical resection of this rare solid thymic anomaly led to an uneventful recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Embryology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Upper airway obstruction in infants necessitates urgent evaluation.
  • Differential diagnoses include infection, trauma, neoplasm, and congenital abnormalities.
  • Aberrant cervical thymic tissue is a rare cause of such obstruction.

Observation:

  • A 6-week-old infant presented with stridor and cyanosis.
  • Imaging revealed a retropharyngeal mass.
  • The mass was surgically resected via an intraoral approach and identified as thymic tissue.

Findings:

  • This is the first reported case of solid aberrant thymic tissue in the retropharyngeal space.
  • The infant experienced acute respiratory distress, exacerbated by laryngomalacia and infection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Post-resection, the infant recovered fully without recurrence.
  • Implications:

    • Aberrant thymic tissue, though rare, should be considered in infants with unexplained respiratory distress.
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is crucial for diagnosis and localization.
    • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can lead to complete recovery.
