Summary

Screening for hypothyroidism in females with high cholesterol may be valuable. This study found a link between thyroid function and cholesterol levels in a primary care setting.

Background:

Hyperlipidemia is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Thyroid dysfunction, particularly hypothyroidism, can influence lipid metabolism.
Integrating thyroid screening into hyperlipidemia programs may enhance early detection and management.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the utility of screening for thyroid dysfunction within a hyperlipidemia screening program.
To investigate the association between thyroid function and lipid profiles in a primary care population.

Main Methods:

A screening study was conducted in a rural Swedish primary health care setting.
Individuals aged 40-59 years were invited to a health screening.

Thyroid function tests (TSH, free T4) and serum lipid profiles were measured.

Main Results:

Hypothyroidism (TSH > 3.75 mU/l) was identified in 0.57% of males and 1.13% of females with serum cholesterol > 7 mmol/l.
In females, higher TSH levels correlated with elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Conclusions:

Screening for hypothyroidism in females presenting with hypercholesterolemia (serum cholesterol > 7.0 mmol/l) appears warranted.
This approach may facilitate the early identification of thyroid dysfunction in at-risk individuals.
