Summary

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are common, but other disorders also cause airflow obstruction. This study outlines a diagnostic approach for these less common obstructive lung diseases, often misdiagnosed.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Respiratory Medicine

Background:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects 10-15% of smokers, with 16 million Americans impacted.
  • Asthma is another prevalent obstructive lung disease.
  • Spirometry is the standard for diagnosing early COPD in smokers and evaluating respiratory symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the diverse range of disorders causing airflow obstruction.
  • To present a diagnostic strategy for obstructive lung disease.

Main Methods:

  • Review of conditions associated with airflow obstruction.
  • Outline of a diagnostic algorithm for obstructive lung disease.

Main Results:

  • COPD and asthma represent the majority of obstructive lung diseases.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A spectrum of less common disorders, including bronchiectasis, upper airway lesions, bronchiolar diseases, and some interstitial lung diseases, can also cause airflow obstruction.
  • These less common conditions are frequently misdiagnosed due to low prevalence and poor recognition.
  • Conclusions:

    • Obstructive lung disease encompasses a heterogeneous group of conditions beyond COPD and asthma.
    • A systematic diagnostic approach is crucial for identifying and managing less common causes of airflow obstruction.
