Background:

  • Aging is characterized by decreased ribosomal gene activity, observed in conditions like Alzheimer's disease and Down's syndrome.
  • Aging is also linked to diminished melatonin synthesis, a hormone primarily produced by the pineal gland.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of pinealectomy on ribosomal gene activity, specifically nucleolar organizing region (NOR) activity, in Wistar rats.
  • To explore the potential of pinealectomy in rats as an animal model for studying the aging process.

Main Methods:

  • Cytogenetic analysis using silver-stained NOR staining was performed on 24 male Wistar rats.
  • Rats were divided into groups undergoing pinealectomy or sham surgery, with assessments at 20 days and 8 months post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • The absence of the pineal gland (pinealectomy) resulted in a significant decrease in NOR activity in Wistar rats.
  • This reduction in NOR activity was observed at both 20-day and 8-month post-surgery time points.
