Summary

This study reports the first tissue-confirmed case of acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) in an adult with AIDS. The patient improved with corticosteroid treatment, suggesting AEP as a potential diagnosis in this population.

Background:

  • Adult patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) can present with various pulmonary complications.
  • Idiopathic interstitial pneumonias have been documented in adults with AIDS.
  • Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is a rare lung condition characterized by eosinophil infiltration.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old male with AIDS presented with acute respiratory distress.
  • Chest radiography revealed diffuse bilateral infiltrates.
  • Thoracoscopic lung biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of AEP.

Findings:

  • No infectious cause was identified for the pneumonia.
  • The patient demonstrated rapid clinical improvement following corticosteroid administration.
