Background:

  • Carotid stenosis poses a significant risk for ischemic stroke.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the indications for carotid endarterectomy (CEA).
  • To detail anesthesia and surgical techniques employed during CEA.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of CEA.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 20 patients undergoing 22 carotid endarterectomies.
  • Procedures performed under general (21 sides) and local (1 side) anesthesia.
  • Carotid occlusion times averaged 35.5 minutes; shunts used in 2 cases; EEG monitoring in 15 operations.

Main Results:

  • Postoperative recovery was uneventful in 17 patients (18 operations).
  • Transient neurological deficits occurred in 3 patients.
  • Follow-up (average 38 months) showed cessation of TIAs in 8/9 patients and improvement in 6/6 with cerebral infarction.

  • The procedure offers substantial benefits for patients with symptomatic carotid artery disease.
