Summary

Patients with emphysema have significantly larger aortic root dimensions. Systemic hypertension is linked to additional enlargement in the proximal ascending aorta and aortic root. This impacts cardiovascular health in emphysema patients.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pulmonology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms are more common in emphysema patients.
  • Aortic root dilatation prevalence and risk factors in emphysema remain undescribed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine aortic root dimensions in emphysema patients.
  • To investigate the relationship between aortic root size and cardiac risk factors.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 47 severe emphysema patients (mean age 67 years).
  • Utilized ultrafast computed tomographic scan and 2D echocardiography for aortic root measurements.
  • Compared measurements to normal values and non-emphysema controls, examining cardiac risk factors.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Emphysema patients showed significantly larger aortic root dimensions (P <.0001).
  • 43% had enlarged sinus of Valsalva and 59% enlarged proximal ascending aorta.
  • Emphysema was a key determinant of aortic root size; hypertension correlated with further dilatation.

Conclusions:

  • Aortic root dimensions are significantly larger in emphysema patients compared to controls.
  • Systemic hypertension contributes to additional enlargement of the proximal aorta, sinus of Valsalva, and sinotubular junction.
