Summary

Changes in cephalometric angles do not reliably indicate facial profile changes in growing patients with malocclusion. This study highlights limitations in using angular measurements alone for assessing treatment outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Craniofacial development
  • Cephalometric analysis

Background:

  • Cephalometric analysis is crucial in orthodontics for assessing craniofacial structures and treatment outcomes.
  • Angular measurements are commonly used to evaluate changes in the facial profile.
  • The reliability of angular measurements in reflecting actual profile changes requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the appropriateness of using changes in angular measurements to reflect actual craniofacial profile changes.
  • To determine the correlation and disagreement between angular and linear cephalometric measures in growing malocclusion patients.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 48 growing patients with malocclusion (24 Class I, 24 Class II) treated with the Edgewise technique was analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Landmark and superimpositional data were extracted from a numerical database.
  • Three pairs of angular and linear measures were computed using the Craniofacial Software Package.
  • Main Results:

    • All three angular and corresponding linear measures showed statistically significant associations (p < 0.001).
    • However, significant disagreement was observed between angular and linear measures, ranging from 10.4% to 37.5%.
    • These findings indicate a considerable discrepancy between angular changes and actual linear profile alterations.

    Conclusions:

    • Changes in cephalometric angles alone are insufficient to reliably infer the direction of displacement of anterior facial landmarks during growth and orthodontic treatment.
    • Clinicians should consider both angular and linear measurements for a comprehensive assessment of craniofacial profile changes.
