Enhancing standard substance abuse treatment with mental health or gender-specific services did not improve completion rates for criminal justice-involved individuals. Age and primary drug use duration were key predictors of treatment completion.
Area of Science:
- Addiction Medicine
- Criminal Justice Health
- Mental Health Services Research
Background:
- High dropout rates in substance abuse treatment are a significant public health concern.
- Individuals involved in the criminal justice system often require specialized substance abuse treatment.
- The effectiveness of enhanced services in improving treatment completion for this population is not well-established.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of integrated mental health and gender-specific services on treatment completion rates.
- To assess the efficacy of a modified therapeutic community setting for substance-abusing offenders.
- To identify predictors of treatment completion in this population.
Main Methods:
- A modified therapeutic community setting was utilized.
- Participants received standard substance abuse services, with some groups receiving additional mental health and/or gender-specific services.
- Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify significant predictors of treatment completion.
Main Results:
- No statistically significant difference in treatment completion rates was observed between groups receiving enhanced services and those receiving only substance abuse services.
- Age and the duration of primary drug use were identified as the only significant predictors of treatment completion.
- The integrated treatment model showed potential for cost-effective resource maximization.
Conclusions:
- Standard substance abuse treatment, even when enhanced with mental health or gender-specific services, did not significantly improve completion rates for criminal justice-involved individuals.
- Treatment completion is primarily influenced by individual factors such as age and drug use history.
- The findings suggest a potentially cost-effective approach to substance abuse treatment for offenders within existing community-based resources.

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
