Summary

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) suites significantly reduce operating room (OR) setup and equipment put-away times. This efficiency gain in MIS suites offers potential cost savings and improves OR turnover for surgical teams.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure and compare the video equipment setup and put-away times in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) suites versus standard operating rooms (ORs).

  • Five registered nurses (RNs) with varied MIS experience were trained on standardized video setup and put-away procedures.

    • Both setup and put-away time differences were statistically significant (p < 0.0001), indicating substantial efficiency improvements with MIS suites.

    Conclusions:

    • The use of MIS suites significantly decreases video setup and put-away times, as demonstrated by simulation.
    • These time savings have the potential for considerable cost reductions, justifying the investment in advanced OR designs.
    • MIS suites represent a key innovation for enhancing OR efficiency and supporting the future of surgical procedures.
