Area of Science:

  • Clinical Toxicology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Acquired methemoglobinemia is a potential complication of certain medications used in critical care and endoscopy.
  • Benzocaine is one such drug that can induce methemoglobinemia.

Observation:

  • A case report details a 31-year-old woman who developed methemoglobinemia after benzocaine exposure during an endoscopic procedure.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced a complete recovery following a rapid intravenous infusion of methylene blue.
  • Methylene blue administration rapidly reversed the methemoglobinemia, restoring normal hemoglobin function.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the critical importance of having methylene blue readily available in endoscopy suites and critical care units.
  • Prompt availability of methylene blue can ensure rapid and effective management of drug-induced methemoglobinemia, improving patient outcomes.
