Synchronous vulvar and breast cancer is rare, especially in young, healthy women. This case highlights a unique presentation of squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva and infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Gynecologic Oncology
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Synchronous occurrence of vulvar and breast malignancies is exceptionally rare.
- Existing literature reports only two prior cases, one in an elderly patient and another in a young patient with HIV.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a unique case of synchronous vulvar and breast cancer in a young, healthy woman.
- To discuss the rarity and clinical implications of this dual cancer presentation.
Main Methods:
- A 44-year-old woman presented with distinct lesions in the vulva and breast.
- Diagnostic work-up confirmed malignancy in both sites.
- Surgical management included radical wide local vulvar excision and modified radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection.
Main Results:
- Pathology revealed moderately-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.
- Pathology confirmed infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast.
- The patient was young and had no significant comorbidities, distinguishing her from previously reported cases.
Conclusions:
- This case represents a rare instance of synchronous vulvar and breast cancer in an otherwise healthy young woman.
- The unique demographic profile underscores the need for vigilance and individualized treatment approaches in rare oncologic presentations.
- Further research into the etiology and optimal management of synchronous vulvar and breast cancers is warranted.
