Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Rare Diseases
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Satoyoshi syndrome is a rare, idiopathic disorder.
  • It presents with muscle spasms, alopecia universalis, GI issues, endocrine dysfunction, and skeletal abnormalities.

Observation:

  • A 9-year-old Thai girl developed alopecia universalis at age 6.
  • Recurrent, painful muscle spasms began at age 7, leading to patella dislocation.
  • Clinical and radiological findings were consistent with Satoyoshi syndrome.

Findings:

  • Oral corticosteroid therapy led to marked improvement in muscle spasms and alopecia.
  • The patient underwent successful corrective knee surgery with normal healing.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the effectiveness of corticosteroid therapy for Satoyoshi syndrome symptoms.
  • Early diagnosis and management are crucial for improving patient outcomes and preventing complications.
